Poolside & Terraces

Surrounds, coping, decking and screening that make the pool part of the garden.

Curved pale concrete pool coping and terrace with screening planting along the boundary, Mullaloo, Perth

What it involves

A pool is usually installed by one contractor and the garden around it by another, and the join between them is where the problems appear. Levels, drainage and barrier compliance all meet at the coping, so that detail is worth resolving before either trade starts.

Materials are chosen for bare feet first. Surfaces that stay cool in full sun, keep their grip when wet, and don't degrade under chlorine or salt air. It is a narrower list than most material boards suggest.

Pool barriers are regulated, and the requirements shape the design rather than sit on top of it, where a fence can run, which gates swing where, and what can be planted or placed near the boundary. We resolve that at concept rather than discovering it at inspection.

Exceptional quality and truly professional service. The work was top-notch and exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend these guys — outstanding results at a very reasonable price.

Commonquestions.

Questions we get about the ground around a pool.

Do you install the pool as well?

No, pool shells are installed by pool builders. We do everything around it, and we coordinate with them so levels, drainage and the coping detail are agreed before either side starts.

Which surfaces stay coolest underfoot?

Lighter, more porous materials generally run cooler than dark, dense ones, and texture matters as much as colour for grip when wet. We narrow it to what performs in full Perth sun rather than what looks best on a sample board indoors.

How does the pool barrier affect the design?

It shapes it. Barrier requirements govern where a fence can run, which way gates swing and what can be placed or planted near them. Those rules are resolved at concept, because moving a compliant fence afterwards is costly.

Can we soften how the pool looks without losing space?

Usually. Narrow planting beds, screening and a change of surface do most of the work. The aim is for the pool to read as part of the garden rather than a fenced rectangle sitting in it.
