What it involves
Orientation and wind decide whether an outdoor room actually gets used. A west-facing area with no shade is unusable through a Perth summer afternoon, and an exposed one is abandoned the moment the sea breeze arrives. Both are solved at design stage or not at all.
Built-in kitchens need their services roughed in before slabs and paving go down, power, water, waste and gas. Retrofitting them afterwards is expensive and the patch is usually visible for the life of the surface.
Spaces get set out against real furniture, not drawings. A table needs clearance to pull chairs out; a fire zone needs seating that fits around it. Getting those dimensions right is the difference between a space that works and one that looks right in a photo.

What comes up most often before an outdoor room is built.
Should the kitchen be built-in or freestanding?
It depends how you use it. Built-in looks resolved and lasts, but the services have to be roughed in before the slab goes down. Freestanding is cheaper and movable but rarely looks like part of the garden. Decide early, retrofitting services into finished paving is the expensive path.
Do we need a roof, or is shade enough?
Shade covers most of it. A roof adds year-round use in rain and lets you leave furniture out, but it also darkens whatever room sits behind it. That trade-off is worth looking at on site before it is drawn.
Which way should it face?
Away from the worst of the afternoon sun and out of the prevailing breeze, which in Perth usually means avoiding a fully exposed western aspect. Orientation decides whether the space gets used, so it comes before the finishes.
Can you work with our existing alfresco?
Often yes. Plenty of projects here are about making an existing alfresco usable, adding shade, screening the wind, extending the paving and connecting it properly to the rest of the garden.
